The Chelsea area, originally known as the community of Melrose, was settled in the mid-1800s. In 1908, the railroad was established and because there was another Melrose on the route, this area was renamed "Chelsea". Incorporated on March 1, 1996, Chelsea had less than 1,000 residents who wished to preserve the values of a close-knit community. There are over two hundred homes constructed each year and Chelsea has remained one of Alabama's fastest-growing cities.
